Watervliet announced plans to narrow lanes near the southbound I-787 on-ramp and replace a Broadway turn lane with a buffered bike lane as part of a traffic-calming project at Broadway and 23rd Street.
The city's Oct. 2 notice said Capital Streets would lead the project, with installation scheduled to begin and finish on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. The notice does not confirm whether the work was completed.
The plan calls for hardened centerlines and flexible posts in the median on 23rd Street near Broadway and the southbound I-787 ramp. According to the city, those changes are intended to narrow lanes and create a wider, slower turning arc for vehicles.
On Broadway, the northbound right-turn lane approaching 23rd Street would be replaced with a buffered bike lane.
The city said the temporary and interim treatments were developed in response to crashes in the immediate area. A $15,000 AARP Community Challenge Grant awarded to Capital Streets funded signage, paint and other traffic-calming measures aimed at speeding and confusing crossings.
The notice also described plans to make the temporary infrastructure permanent using funds from the $4.5 million awarded to Watervliet through NY Forward.
